The Municipality of Larnaka and the Larnaka Regional Tourism Body are organising an event to include Larnaka in the Guinness World Records for the “Largest Hasapiko Dance”, the greatest number of people simultaneously performing this 5 minute traditional greek dance.
This special event will be held in the cosmopolitan Phinikoudes (Palm Trees) Promenade in Larnaka on 12/12/2010 at 12:00 noon.
Join us in the attempt to make history by breaking the record. The event is open to people of all ages and nationalities as long as they learn the steps. For this, hasapiko dance lessons will be held before the event as well as a fast-track dance session right before the event for those who learn quickly!

Uniform: All participants must wear black trousers and a white shirt. Special belts will be provided for free.
Free Dance Lessons
Every afternoon from 6-10 December 2010 between 18:00-19:00 hrs at the premises of the Cultural Services Municipal Office at Athens Avenue.

Hasapiko Dance
Hasapiko is a traditional Greek dance. The name derives from the word “butcher” (hasapis). The dance originated among members of the Butcher’s Guild in Constantinople in Byzantine times.
It is danced in lines by extending arms out to both sides and resting hands on the shoulders of the persons next to you. The steps vary, but for this event all should follow the same steps. To see an example of the hasapiko dance click here
