Internet users petition against unfair prices for electricity in Cyprus

We knew, and even reported, back when the power station was being put out after the Mari disaster last year that we should expect a sharp rise in electricity costs.

This could be attributed to the extra instalments, coal and other needed resources needed to cope with the shortage. However many don’t agree, and are attributing the raising costs to the undying greed of the Government, who owns the ONLY electricity provider on the island the Electricity Authority of Cyprus.

At this moment over 1,000 people across the island are petitioning against the virtual monopoly created by the EAC, after some people received bills that were more than their rent.

What is your opinion? Are the raises justified? Should the struggling ruling party pick up the tab for the electricity crisis they caused? Or should we all just bite our lips and knuckle down to the idea that if we don’t pay we will be shoved even further back into the dark ages?
