FluffyFish Productions is proud to announce the much anticipated concert of the legendary Buena Vista Social Club® presenting Eliades Ochoa.

Living legend ELIADES OCHOA is a founding member of the Buena Vista Social Club® phenomenon and a Grammy award-winner with the 1997 BVSC® recording – the biggest-selling World Music album ever!

With his trademark ‘guajiro’ cowboy hat and his deep rural roots, singer, guitarist and composer Ochoa is considered as one of the most important Cuban soneros and promoters of Cuban traditional music. Born on June 11, 1946, in Songo La Maya, Santiago de Cuba province, Ochoa began playing the guitar and the “tres” at the age of six. He developed his highly distinctive vocal qualities as an interpreter of Cuban traditional music such as sones, guarachas, guajiras and boleros. To help support his family, Ochoa began to learn his trade from the streets of Santiago. He worked with many groups during his career, including the Septetos Cubanos and Casa de la Troya. In 1978 he joined Cuarteto Patria, as director and singer, becoming the leader of the illustrious group that has been keeping the tradition of Cuban folk music alive since 1940.

In 1986 he recorded the legendary song ‘Chan Chan’ together with the renowned Cuban musician Francisco Repilado, internationally known as Compay Segundo and in 1989 they performed in USA (Washington), Guadeloupe and the Dominican Republic. By the time he was invited to join the Buena Vista Social Club® project produced by famed Ry Cooder on the World Circuit Music label in 1996, he had already been involved in the music industry for a quarter of a century. In this project Ochoa was reunited with Compay Segundo, and some of the best performers of Cuban son.

It was this involvement with the Buena Vista Social Club® and the Oscar-nominated and multi award-winning Wim Wenders film of the same name, that led Ochoa to worldwide fame, mainstream prominence and associated him to a repertoire of songs that have since become world classics. The 1997 BVSC® recording, with more than eight million records sold to date, showcased a dream team of veterans from Cuban music’s golden age and introduced the rhythms of son, bolero and danzón to a new audience making stars of Ibrahim Ferrer, Rubén González, Eliades Ochoa, Omara Portuondo and Compay Segundo and made songs like ‘Chan Chan’, ‘El Cuarto de Tula’ and ‘Candela’ known the world over. The stratospheric success of these artists lead to sold-out concerts, topped the charts everywhere from Germany to Japan, and to countless international awards for all of the musicians involved.

Ochoa is featured in the Buena Vista Social Club® award-winning film of their concerts in Amsterdam and New York City. He has toured in more than 40 countries, and played in concert halls from the most prestigious concert platform in America, New York’s Carnegie Hall, to Tokyo’s Blue Note to London’s Hammersmith Apollo. Together with Compay Segundo, Ochoa has recorded significant Cuban themes such as ‘Son de Oriente’ and ‘Chanchaneando’. He has collaborated with Cameroon saxophonist Manu Dibango, Americans Bob Dylan and Charlie Musselwhite, and various Cuban legends. He is the winner of not only a Grammy and two other Grammy nominations for his solo albums, but also many Lucas awards, several Golden Records, and various other international prizes that have solidified his current worldwide status and fame.

On October 13, 2008, World Circuit launched the album Buena Vista Social Club® live at Carnegie Hall with Eliades Ochoa as one of the main artists. Also, currently in pre-production with World Circuit is Ochoa’s next album, a fusion of his music with traditional and famous African musicians. If history has anything to do with it we should expect another Grammy nomination!

The concert in Cyprus is part of a new world tour and will be presented with the noble support of the Nicosia Municipality. It is held under the auspices of the Cuban Embassy in Cyprus. Part of the proceeds will be donated to the Telethon 2009 charity. Audiences will also be thrilled to know that the songs in the show have been especially chosen for the Cyprus audience.
