All mother-in-laws are created equal. But some are more equal than others
Did you hear the one about the mother-in-law that worked as a radio show sex therapist and got awarded an MBE for services to the entertainment industry? Her husband was a narcoleptic, closet cross-dresser with post-war traumatic disorder, her daughter can barely communicate, even with the aid of badly-made hand puppets and her evil-minded prodigal son is trying to push the entire dysfunctional mess right over the edge.
Yep. Rubber Ear are back in town.
After last years sensational Sex, Chips and Ouzo tour, writer and director Kathleen Ruddy are following up the success with The Devil Wears Primark and are touring island-wide, from Pomos to Paralimni.
As with Sex, Chips and Ouzo, the show stars Kathleen Ruddy herself as Athenoulla, the inimitably formidable matriarch, as well as co-stars Richard Didonian and Jo Cannon (also from SC&O) as her emasculated husband and troubled daughter respectively.
The plot centres around a dementedly unbalanced London-Cypriot family that comes together to celebrate the imminent MBE award for Athenoulla Georgiou, their controlling mother and wife, whose questionable radio sex therapy advice to the UK listeners extends to members of her own family whether they want it or not.
As with all of Ruddys previous award-winning plays Sex, chips and Ouzo, Check Your Coupon and Glasgow Hard Tickets, the dialogue bristles with inventiveness and sharp humour, the action is unpredictable and the plot twists and turns in a maze of surprises.
With Rubber Ear Productions the performance is guaranteed to be flawless and energetic and, more importantly, belly-achingly funny.
More details and updates on The Devil Wears Primark tour of Cyprus can be found on the Rubber Ear Productions Blog on www.rubberear.wordpress.com and on their Facebook pages. The company can be contacted on [email protected] or by calling 99 069074 or 99 908434.
Tickets will be available soon at a pre-sale price of 15 per person for the month of July and 20 per person thereafter. Early booking is strongly advised for all venues as Rubber Ear tend to sell out quite rapidly. Last years sell-outs at Crown Resorts in Coral Bay and Paphos Ancient Odeon Amphitheatre left many disappointed residents having to seek seats at Pissouri and Curium late on in the tour.
At present the tour is as follows:
